interview with KUBED (koo bed) Fight Gear CEO / Founder Kelvin or just KT E-mail

Digg!
So Kelvin, how long have you been in the Mixed Martial Arts business and what
got you started?
* Well my love for martial arts can go way back to Bruce Lee.  That is were I got my start in the martial arts.  I was 8 years old and I have been involved with Karate, muay thai, hapkido, jujitsu, mma training etc.  We started training MMA when we saw this skinny little man that we thought was going to get destroyed by the name of Mr. Royce Gracie.  When we saw what Royce could do in the early days of the UFC we were hooked.  Our first training in Jujitsu was tapes we bought and practiced in our Hapkido class.  Those were the days any little technique we learned we thought we were world beaters.

So Kelvin, how long have you been in the Mixed Martial Arts business and what
got you started?
I have been involved with MMA since the early 90's as a fan, student and practitioner.  I have been involved in MMA on the business side since around 2004.  What got me started is the love for the sport.  I have always been a martial arts and boxing fan.  My father and uncles were all the biggest boxing fans.  Just listening to those argument's on who could beat who or who was the greatest of all time made me a fan.  The greats like Ali and Frazier were really before my time so watching those old school tapes made me a big fan of fighting.

What sort of interesting things can you tell me about your experiences in
MMA?
The fighters for the most part are very personable and humble.  I have met just about everyone that is a major figure or contributor to the sport of MMA.  I love it!  I go to fights just about every week.  This year alone KUBED (koo bed) Fight Gear will have been at 70+ events selling clothing.  This is a grassroots effort for sure but it's great to be with the fans and the fighters.

Tell me, what is your biggest "Pet Peeve" when dealing with fighters or
managers?
professionalism in terms of respect.  We are a reflection of our sport and fans come out to see a good event.  When the managers and or fighters are not respectful of that it creates problems.

What do you look for in fighters you sponsor with KUBED?
First and for most I look for fighters who are going to represent KUBED to the best of their ability. It's not always the strongest, biggest, baddest fighter that I want to represent KUBED. I don't always look at their record because I know that everybody can lose, you win some you lose some. I want to build a relationship with a fighter. I look for hunger in a fighter how bad does that individual want success!  I have struggled for a good part of my life so I understand perseverance.  I look for someone that want's to grow with KUBED.  I am out here constantly trying to grow my brand and lifestyle.  So I ask are you going to support me and KUBED like you want me to support your career?

Where are you from?
Chicago BABY!

Who is your favorite MMA fighter?
I have a high level of respect for Royce Gracie and the entire Gracie family.  The Gracie family is the first family of MMA.  I have had the pleasure of meeting Randy Couture what an awesome guy!  Very humble and very personable.  I am a big Wanderlei Silva fan I gave him a KUBED shirt at the Arnold in Columbus OH and he was so greatful for that.  It made me feel good that he was so appreciative.  There is so many Rampage, Fedor, Rich Franklin, Anderson Silva etc.  I've had the honor of meeting all of these guys.

What can a fighter expect from KUBED while being sponsored?
A fighter can expect 100% support from KUBED along with KUBED fight gear. As the relationship grows and their success grows they can expect to get paid, but the only way KUBED can financially support a fighter is if they also promote KUBED's product.  Fighters also need to know how the process works and what I mean when I say that is we have to pay for everything. When we go to shows we have to pay to get there and pay to set up shop there. We have to pay for the product to be made and shipped. We pay for ads in magazines and spots on radio stations. We have to pay for everything nothing is free.  Not every fighter will get to that level. It takes time and fighters have to be patient and realize how the process works.  A fighter can also expect that I am constantly trying to grow my brand through different organizations and media outlets.

How well is KUBED doing in sales since you started?

Well KUBED (koo bed) Fight Gear is still a new brand.  I created it in 2004 didn't really get it going until 2005.  The years of 2006 and 2007 have been great!  The majority of KUBED's sales are at the local shows but the KUBED website has picked up sales so that is always awesome!  Look for KUBED Fight Gear in a retail store near you in 2008!

Tell me about the KUBED brand.
KUBED Fight Gear is a lifestyle brand. KUBED stands for Knuckle Up Break Em Down. It was started and designed by me KT. When I started KUBED I had already had a clothing line, EndurancE Sportswear.  With my love of the sport and my love for Hip Hop, KUBED was born. KUBED has now been affiliated with over 40 different organizations now through out the US and predominately through out the Mid-West.  I try to look at life with the glass half full.  My family and I grew up poor and for as long as I can remember I wanted to be successful.  So KUBED (koo bed) to me is the embodiment of struggle, perseverance, the will to win, living life to it's fullest!  Don't give up fight through this good and bad times try to have a positive attitude and be thankful!  KUBED is a lifestyle brand and it was created from my own experiences and my friends and families experiences.
